We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer / Senior Systems Engineer in our Colorado Springs, CO office.

 

The role encompasses elements of technical leadership, coordination, contribution and oversight with knowledge of Systems Engineering, project execution and subject matter expertise. The successful candidate will work with and lead a team of engineers to analyze customer requirements and development of solutions; provide high level architecture, design implementation details, work with manufacturing to ensure the proper parts and equipment are ordered, and technical communications with customers.

Under general direction, this position is responsible for providing technical leadership in applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems in the development, integration and testing of new and emerging technologies or intellectual property. This includes proposal support; requirements analysis and management; technical task planning; technical documentation (including SOW and specifications detail review, presentations, technical interchanges, ICDs, etc.); design synthesis and oversight in a multi-functional engineering environment; production support; test and verification coordination/analysis/oversight; subcontract oversight (as applicable); proactively engage in program risk and opportunity management; and system deployment technical support during the project lifecycle.

Experience and Skills

The ideal candidate will demonstrate how they can:

  • Influence and execute research and development for differentiation of offering(s).

  • Assist project managers in defining engineering systems design and technical requirements.

  • Assist in engineering efforts in support of request for proposals.

  • Assists in the capture and/or management of customer and derived requirements, decomposition and assignment of requirements to appropriate cross-disciplinary team responsibility, ensuring traceability from a verification test matrix back to original customer and system level requirements.

  • Assists in the planning and conducting of technical projects or portions of projects.

  • Helps develop technical specifications, interface control documents, test plans and procedures, analyzes configuration and processing solutions, and performance validation/verification to specifications.

  • Technical leadership of project team(s) in development, integration and operational tests of complex systems/components for protected tactical communications applications.

  • Ensures technical performance, quality, and adherence to schedule.

  • Follows processes in conformance with established policies and objectives.

  • Coordination/Delegation of the efforts of technical support personnel, to include technical leadership and mentoring of less senior staff.

  • Provide technical consultation to internal organizations and/or customers.

  • May evaluate vendor/subcontractor capabilities to provide required products or services.

  • Lead and participate in technical and programmatic aspects of key project reviews.

  • Provide Subject Matter Expert level guidance on tactical or protected communications architecture and infrastructure in the development of technical documentation, briefings, and presentations.

  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases in support of PM; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

  • Proactively establish strong customer trusted-advisor relationships.

 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

  • US Citizenship is required.

  • B.S. degree in an applicable engineering, technical, or science discipline.

  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience with Engineering, Systems, Integration, Test, Software, and / or Engineering Project Leadership, preferably within the aerospace or aviation industries, or minimum 3 years with Master’s degree.

  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret level clearance is required. Active Secret or TS/SCI level clearance is desired.

  • Ability to interpret complex engineering requirements.

  • Ability to articulate technical solutions for proposals and design reviews.

  • Ability to apply disciplined systems engineering practices (requirements traceability, architecture development, and validation/verification).

  • Experience in leading complex projects, product development or system-level integrated solutions and their associated lifecycle (a plus, preferably in military application environment).

  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering, RF/communications systems, system integration, and tactical or communication systems architectures.

  • Provide analytical, strategic thinking and leadership support that enables the program management team to ensure a proactive approach to issue resolution.

  • Understanding of engineering architecture and design concepts along with basic understanding of the engineering practices and procedures required to develop, test and deploy systems.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, team leadership abilities, and a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical concepts both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to interface directly with customers.

  • Ability to productively contribute work, ideas and collaboration as part of a team environment, with limited direction, to meet project execution requirements (technical performance, schedule and budget objectives).

  • Problem solving skills and the ability to meet critical deadlines.

  • Knowledge in current and evolving communications and systems with emphasis on DoD applications:
    • Advanced radio systems concepts (e.g. software-defined radio and data transport)

    • Spread Spectrum concepts, technology and applications (e.g. DSSS or FHSS)

    • Wireless communications waveforms/concepts (narrowband and wideband)

    • Modulation schemes, encoding techniques, forward-error correction

  • Ability, willingness to travel when required to support customer business development briefings, technology demonstrations, project integration and test at customer sites, and potentially fielded systems support.

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Tactical Data Links (e.g. BE-CDL, SATCOM links, or wireless communications.

  • Familiarity with commercial communications/modems (e.g. iDirect Hub, VSAT, TDMA equip).

  • Experience interfacing directly with the Government/Military personnel and interfacing directly with large prime contractor customers.

  • RF system-level subject matter expertise – terminology, concepts, application of theory, and applicable measurement instrumentation test methodology and application (e.g. Eb/No, SNR, dynamic range, spectrum analyzers, arbitrary waveform generators, noise generators, etc.).

  • Understanding of typical project/product development review processes (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, etc.).

  • Knowledge of DSP-based algorithms and FPGA firmware (VHDL, Verilog) implementations.

  • Software (C++) or scripting (Python) development experience.

  • Simulation tools experience (e.g. MATLAB).

  • Familiar with LINUX and Windows operating systems.

  • Agile development implementation and processes.
